Flat-pack furniture assembly that lasts

What is flat-pack assembly?

Flat-pack assembly is the process of building furniture or other household items from individual components, panels, and hardware (such as screws and dowels) that are shipped unassembled inside flat cardboard boxes.

These units are usually made from engineered woods like medium-density fibreboard (MDF) or chipboard, which are lighter and cheaper than solid wood.

Because of the lightness of the materials, it is essential that flat-pack assembly is done properly and takes into account how units, for example a wardrobe, are going to be anchored.

3 Do’s and 3 Don’ts of flat-pack assembly

  • Do take care when cutting open the cardboard packaging so you don’t accidentally cut the materials

  • Do read the instructions carefully and reference them regularly to make sure you have not made a mistake

  • Do anchor larger units to a wall for safety and ease of cleaning/vacuuming

  • Don’t rush. It’s better to go slowly and make less/no mistakes that waste time

  • Don’t lose any pieces (keep all parts and fixings organised neatly)

  • Don’t skip anchoring larger units to a wall

Why anchoring flat-pack units to a wall is important

First and foremost, anchoring correctly means that the unit won’t easily tip over and injure someone.

Secondly, anchoring means that the unit will last much longer than a unit that is unanchored and therefore wobbly.

If a unit is left unanchored, it will not be sturdy and this will result in failure of hardware, sagging and loss of functionality over time.

Our flat-pack services

At Handyman Clonakilty, we have a lot of experience in assembling flat-pack items from the likes of IKEA, JYSK, Woodie’s, B&Q and local hardware shops.

Our flat-pack assembly is carried out in such a way that your unit will be sturdy, safe and properly-functioning.

Carefully removing sections of skirting board can help with the structural integrity of light flat-pack units because the wall offers additional support. Recessing into the skirting board also makes vacuuming the room a lot easier.
