Can I paint my uPVC door?

Yes, you can absolutely paint your uPVC door.

The trouble with white plastic is that it tends to discolour after a while, especially if it’s exposed to the sun and the rain all the time.

By painting your uPVC door, you can get it back to looking its best and boost your home’s kerb appeal.

The first step is to remove all hardware (letterbox, knob etc.) as this can get covered in paint if it remains on the door during the job.

Using your soft kitchen brush, sweep away any dust or cobwebs. Then, wash your door with a sponge and soapy water, dry it, and place a dust sheet beneath the open door.

Next, use a light sandpaper all over the surface of the door to create a key for the paint to stick to. Make sure you go all around the door frame, from top to bottom, paying particular attention to any window frames within the door. Mask off handles and other details.

Choosing the right paint for your uPVC door project is crucial. Many places now offer primer-and-paint in one so you can skip the primer part if you want. Regardless of what type of priming you do, make sure the paint is specifically intended for use on a uPVC surface.

It’s not recommended to apply uPVC paint when the temperature is below 10°c. This is because the specialist paint will not dry properly at colder temperatures.

Once you have finished painting, you can further spruce up your door by replacing the hardware or painting it befofre you reinstall it.
