Having a letter opening cut into your door means a colder house and higher heating bills.

Despite this, many Irish homes, including newly-built homes, have large holes cut into otherwise insulated doors.

Developers and builders choose this approach because it saves them money. They prefer to pass the problem of cold air ingress and higher heating bills onto the homeowner.

Closing up your door’s letter-opening and sealing it is a straight-forward and inexpensive process. Once the hole is sealed and insulated, you will have benefit from a significantly warmer house and reduced heating bills on cold days.

Installing a metal postbox somewhere on the outside of your home is also a straight-forward process. There are many options in terms of placement including on the wall of your house, on your gate or even on a dedicated post.

While it’s very easy to get your hands on a metal postbox these days, many of them are in the ‘English rose’ style or other styles that are non-traditional in Ireland. To get around this, and to increase the lifespan of your postbox, we recommend painting the whole box in multiple coats of appropriate outdoor paint.

A customised colour, chosen by you, will give a little more joy each time you check the post.

At Handyman Clonakilty, we seal door-letterboxes and install hanging postboxes to a high standard, using the appropriate materials for durability and longevity.
